Jessie’s interview with Capital FM Birmingham yesterday (April 10) check it out!

Maybe you were wondering why one of the UK’s hottest music stars postponed a sell-out arena tour to appear on a TV talent show – one that saw ratings plummet during its first series?

Well, the answer is sitting snugly beside her in a bathrobe between photos on TV magazines exclusive shoot.

Jessie J gazes in awe at her fellow Voice UK coach Sir Tom Jones.

“I knew he was still going to be sitting next to me,” she says.

“And I said to Jessie: ‘I’ll do it if you will,’” Sir Tom smiles back at her.

The TV Magazine shoot takes place two days before Comic Relief, with Jessie gearing up to have her hair shaved off for charity, and as the pair engage in some gentle joshing about the big night (“I’m looking forward to that,” says Tom, “so long as it’s you doing it, not me!”), their closeness is evident.

Both are easy and attentive in one another’s company.

Endearingly, Jessie leaps to Sir Tom’s defence over the last series.

“I got frustrated last year with people taking the mickey out of Tom’s name-dropping – making him feel like it was a bad thing to be proud of what he’s done,” says Jessie, 24.

“You can’t underestimate his experience. I’ve always said that if I auditioned, I would choose Tom as my coach.

“I just think, this year, we’re more comfortable with ourselves,” she reflects on why she and Tom returned. “And the talent is more confident too.”

During his 50 years in the music business, Pontypridd legend Sir Tom has sung with them all – from Elvis Presley to Aretha Franklin.

“I’ve never seen anyone work so hard,” says Jessie. “He’s a gentleman. The one thing I’m hoping for is longevity, and I’m learning from the master, sitting in his robe, looking swagalicious.”

They might seem an unlikely combination, but when it comes to God-given vocal talent, Sir Tom and Jessie are cut from the same cloth.

Both started singing from an early age.

When did the pair of you decide to come back for a second series of The Voice UK?

Sir Tom: We were at the Diamond Jubilee and were chatting in the dressing rooms. Jessie said: ‘Are you going to do it?’ and I said: ‘I’ll do it if you will.’

Jessie: I think it was important that we all knew it was going to grow from the platform it started from. It would have been weird for the audience if it had only been two of us returning and two new people.

Jessie, you look gutted when acts don’t pick you – do you take it more personally?

Jessie: [Points at Sir Tom] They always pick him. And the only Essex girl this series went with Will. I was gutted. I won’t deny there were moments when I walked off the stage going [looks deflated]: ‘Why didn’t I get them?’ It’s really hard because you’re basing it all on 90 seconds of singing, which is nothing. You just have to go with your gut instinct and your heart.

Jessie, when you rush up to give contestants a hug, is that you being emotional or trying to get first dibs?

Jessie: I’m a girl. If I was sat there crying and none of these guys came up and gave me a cuddle, s***’s going down! Come on now. That’s just the way I’ve been brought up.

Jessie J has said that the show is unique because the judges never ridicule or bully contestants.

“It is a music show that celebrates and doesn’t ridicule. It is unrealistic, although perhaps fashionable, to compare any show that is brand new. The Voice is like nothing else, there is no bullying, pointing and laughing or editing to make people look horrific.”

Jessie also hit back at criticism that the show wasn’t a credible starting point for musicians, saying:

“If it was that bad I wouldn’t be back for a second series. I definitely wouldn’t be sitting in the chair if it was bad, if it wasn’t credible.”

The Voice series two starts Saturday 30 March on BBC1.

The Script’s Danny O’Donoghue is as lovely in real life as he is on The Voice. When Look magazine bumped into him backstage at the BRITs nominations party last month, he was only too happy to pull up a chair and chat to them, dishing the dirt on series two of the BBC talent series, what it’s like working with Jessie J and which Will.i.am quote still gives him the giggles.

What’s it like working with Jessie J?

“Jessie J’s amazing. She’s just getting bigger and better and stronger. I love her, she’s so inspiring and to have a wonderful singer like that, someone who’s so so good around you all the time is great – you get really inspired by her.”

Will you be recording a song together?

“We’ve talked about working together, we talked about it on the first series. It just so happens that me and Will got into the studio together. But yeah, I can imagine her doing a song with Will, me doing a song with her, me and Tom doing a song… so you never know.”

Daley was interviewed by LOOK magazine about his collaboration with Jess and shooting the video check out the interview below.

Hi Daley! We love the track, how did you get Jessie J involved?

“When I first moved down to London from Manchester, neither of us had been signed and we were both just doing the rounds. We were performing at all these showcases and open-mic nights and we were on the same bill for a couple of those – that’s how we met – and we just kept in touch. Jessie then obviously just blew up.  I was writing my album and we’d been saying for ages that we wanted to work together, so when I did Remember Me I just got in touch with her about it and asked if she wanted to have a listen. I didn’t hear back from her for a couple of months – she’s quite busy! I kind of wrote it off and then about three days before it went out to radio she dropped me a text saying: “Yep, I like it – let’s do it tomorrow”. So we just went to the studio and recorded it. She’s been really, really supportive. To have her now singing on my first proper single is just a really nice feeling.

Tell us about the video – we’re obsessed with Jessie’s leather dress!

“The video was a lot of fun. Jessie kind of left it to me as she was busy in the States finishing her second album. I’m really involved with my videos, so I had an idea of how I wanted it to look. I wanted this beige colouring, and for everything to be quite dark and black and white. So I worked on that with the director. Jessie knew what I wanted and picked out what to wear. We were meant to shoot over here (UK) but we went over to LA, where Jessie’s based right now. It was good fun, we messed around a lot on set, then the next day we went to the Six Flags Magic Mountain Theme Park and just rode around on rollercoasters all day.”

Jessie and Joan had a chat the night before Jessie’s gig at the Roundhouse in London. They talked about the Olympics and Joan quizzed her on English slang and getting her to translate for those of us not raised with a BA in UK vernacular.

“It’s been an electric infectious feel. London just feels like the place to be right now.”

Jessie J’s ecstatic about the Olympic games taking over her hometown this summer; and she also has some ideas about events to be added to the roster in the future.

“I think it would be who could sing in tune the best whilst running on the spot. ‘Cause I do that on stage to keep myself fit. So that maybe could be a good one. Domino’s not easy to sing and jump up and down but I can’t help myself.”

The two of us are chatting in the park tower hotel just a day before she’s scheduled to play a concert – sponsored by vitaminwater – at the Camden Roundhouse, a venue with special meaning to British performers akin to how some artists feel about Toronto Massey hall.

But right now, it’s clear we’ve both got Olympic fever and our conversation drifts back to favourite events.

“When I was younger, it was gymnastics because I would spend the whole time watching doing rolly pollies in my living room – i should probably call them forward rolls now – rolly pollies is more fun. but now synchronized swimming blows my mind. basketball I love. And the 100 metres because it’s just like VROOM and they’re done. where did they go!?”

Though Jessie yet to set anything in stone for a possible North American tour, it hasn’t stopped her from exporting her success across the pond with hits like “pricetag,” “domino,” and her latest hit, “laser lights.”

In an effort to bridge the gap between her British fans and those of us who speak a different kind of English, i asked Jessie to help translate slang from the streets of London into North American speak. The results were hilarious:

chin wag: “chin wag is like…we’re having a chin wag now. you know you just have a little chin wag with your friends. I’ve got a good chin for wagging.”

gutted: “that’s good in an Essex accent because you don’t really get the ‘t’s. that’s like, I’m gutted. I’m disappointed.”

faff: “I love a faff. Just faffing around. If you were at home and you needed to leave the house, but you ended up emptying the dishwasher, sorting out things, like faffing. Things that aren’t necessary. Like this [Jessie rearranges the flower vase and vitaminwater bottle on the table.]. I don’t know! When you’re getting ready and you’re constantly like [fidgets with her hair, clothes]. You know. Faffing!”**

taking the piss: “I love taking the piss. Not literally. I mean I love that saying. Because I always say ‘taking the piss out of my life.’ taking the piss is like taking the mickey: someone is taking you for granted or doing something you don’t agree with.”

**note: I ran into man of steel star henry cavil at Jessie J’s concert a day after this interview. As we were talking, a asked the British actor if he could define “faffing about” to which he replied very succinctly “to do nothing consciously.”  It cleared up a lot of things, but Jessie explanation will always be my favourite.
